The difference is knowing where to stand and when the light is good. Here are the spots worth the early alarm, with honest advice on each.

1. The cypress cluster near San Quirico

The famous group of cypress trees standing alone on a bare hill — arguably the single most iconic image of Tuscany. Best in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon; harsh at midday. Roadside parking is limited, so arriving early matters.

2. Podere Belvedere at sunrise

A lone farmhouse on a ridge above a hollow that fills with mist at dawn. This is a sunrise shot — be in position fifteen minutes before the sun comes up, because twenty minutes after, the mist is gone. See the sunrise photo tour.

3. Podere Baccoleno, Crete Senesi

The winding drive with its spiral of cypresses across the bare clay hills of the Crete Senesi. Late afternoon light rakes across the ridges beautifully, and in spring the hills turn brilliant green.

4. Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta

The small chapel between two lines of cypresses. A short walk from the road keeps most people away — shoot it at golden hour with the sun low behind it.

5. Abbazia di San Galgano

A vast roofless Gothic abbey — grass floor, open sky, stone arches — just twenty-five minutes from Casole d’Elsa. The interior is best under bright midday light pouring through the missing roof; the exterior warms up at golden hour.
