Chianti Classico Wine Tour: Castellina, Radda & Gaiole in a Day
Chianti Classico is the wine most people picture when they think of Tuscany: deep, food-friendly reds made from Sangiovese, grown on hillsides between Florence and Siena. The heart of it — the Classico zone, marked by the black-rooster seal — is barely an hour from the villas around Casole d’Elsa. It makes for one of the easiest and most rewarding wine days in the region.
The villages worth your time
You do not need to see all of Chianti. Three villages give you its character:
- Castellina in Chianti — walled, with an ancient covered walkway and good enotecas for a first taste.
- Radda in Chianti — small, medieval and quiet, high on a ridge with long views over the vineyards.
- Gaiole in Chianti — surrounded by some of the most historic estates and castle-wineries in the zone.
Between them run the back roads that make Chianti famous, and I pull over wherever a bend opens onto the vines.
What the Black Rooster means
The Gallo Nero (Black Rooster) on the bottle neck tells you the wine is genuine Chianti Classico, grown and made inside the historic zone to stricter rules than plain “Chianti”. It is a small but useful thing to know when you are choosing a case to take home.
A relaxed day, two estates
A good Chianti day means one small family cellar — where you meet the people who actually make the wine — and one larger historic estate for a more structured tasting, with a long lunch on a terrace in between. That is plenty for one day. See the full Chianti Classico wine day for how it runs.
No one has to stay sober to drive. Everyone tastes, and the case of wine rides home in the boot.
When to go
Chianti is beautiful from late spring to October. September and early October bring the vendemmia (harvest) — the estates are busy and alive, and the light is gorgeous. If you also want the classic rolling-hills scenery, pair it with ideas from the best photo spots in Tuscany.
Plan your Chianti day
Send me your dates and how many of you there are, and I’ll book two estates to suit your taste and put lunch in the middle. Quoted on request — one price for the whole van.
